DIRECTORS VOICE

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT (ECD) may be summarized as the holistic development of a child from birth to nine years old- to their full potential. Holistic development is inclusive of the child’s physical, cognitive, socio-emotional, language and moral domains. Thus, the development of the whole child. It must be understood that it is not necessarily obvious that the natural pattern of growth in children results in holistic development. Yes! The child’s pattern of growth unfolds according to their genetic makeup. However, research shows that the interaction of both genetics and the child’s environment plays a vital role in not just determining growth but determines a child’s development as well. Whilst we cannot change the child’s genetic makeup, we do have control over the environment provided for the child’s development.

In order for a seed to grow, it must be embedded in fertile soil, cultivated and nurtured. The provision of appropriate nutrients and specialized intervention will produce a healthy and productive tree. Likewise, it is critical that the development of the child be embedded in an appropriate specialized nurturing environment.
